Los Angeles: Exhibit, Chef and Theatre Picks for this Week’s Art Dating and Matchmaking

Art and Living checks in with Christy Dusablon for her weekly dish on the best places to see art, dine and enjoy a night out on the town! If you have a gallery, museum, exhibit, chef, or performing arts event you want to see on Art Date, e-mail Christy at christy@artandliving.com.

Talented African American artist Kara Walker challenges our perspective on conventional American history narratives and the antebellum South in her visually striking exhibit My Complement, My Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love, currently showing at the Hammer Museum. Walker illustrates her perspective on slavery, race and liberation in a slightly humorous manner, while at the same time staying reverent. She also approaches themes of sexual attraction, exploitation, and discrimination along the same line. The exhibit challenges conventional notions but still evokes a powerful message about important topics.

I have recommended this restaurant before, and I will recommend it again–it’s that good. Palomino is situated right next door to the Hammer Museum, so whether you want to dine before or after the exhibit is up to you. It’s absolutely imperative that you and your friends go during HAPPY HOUR, which is from 4-7pm everyday, and every night after 10pm. During happy hour you can get the most unbelievably tasty appetizers for half price and selected drinks for $3 each. Trust me, it’s worth it. You will not be disappointed.

Emergency is a critically acclaimed one-man show written and performed by Daniel Beaty showing at The Geffen Playhouse this Saturday at 8:30 pm. In his performance, Beaty portrays 40 characters, all of whom are responding to a stunning phenomenon: a slave ship rising out of the Hudson River. He uses slam poetry, multi-character transformation and song to show the range of emotion between each new character. This is only showing until May 25th, so make sure to get in soon.
